Geetie Singh
Geetie Singh is the Managing Director and founder of Sloeberry Trading Ltd, which operates The Duke of Cambridge Organic pub. She firmly believes businesses must act responsibly and be led by their values. After working in the restaurant trade for several years, she was horrified by the wastefulness that she witnessed – food was regularly thrown away, nothing was recycled and seasonal eating was unheard of. Geetie was determined to combine her passion of pubs and food, and set up a business that could thrive without harming the environment, bringing delicious organic food to its customers, and educating them about organics, sustainable living and seasonal eating.
She set up the Duke of Cambridge to be the UK’s first organic gastropub, and it has been an outstanding success, regarded as one of the best places to eat out in London. Geetie says: “I grew up in a commune in the Midlands, we were taught as kids to think of the impact you were having on society and when I started working in restaurants 15 years ago I became deeply disillusioned with the lack of sustainability. I quickly decided there was a market for a restaurant that was thinking about its impact on the environment as well as serving fantastic food and drink. Am I an environmentalist or a restaurateur? Well I don’t think you can do what I do without being bloody good at your job, but I would say both are equally important to me. Food is my love – but food at any cost? Not on your life! ”
